In the midst of a year of political and economic crisis, the age of public radio in Germany was ushered in with the first broadcast of the "Berliner Funkstunde", from the attic of an office building on Potsdamer Platz. The composers assembled on this album not only profited from these developments, but also, in part, actively shaped them. The composer Ernst Toch experienced the crisis year of 1923 in Mannheim, where his "Dance Suite" op. 30 was premiered on with great success. In this work, Toch was able to realize his interest in cross-disciplinary collaboration and new forms of expression. His imaginative use of instruments is one of the most fascinating aspects of the suite. The "Frauentanz" for soprano, flute, viola, clarinet, horn and bassoon op. 10 by Kurt Weill, written in the summer of 1923, reflects the interest in chamber music line-ups typical of the time. The decisive factor was not only a new ideal of sound and expression, but also the experience that in times of crisis, pieces with small ensembles had better chances of being performed. Ernst Krenek had found essential impulses for his work in Berlin; when the crisis came to a head in the summer of 1923 he composed the "Three Mixed Choirs" a cappella op. 22 on poems by Matthias Claudius. Krenek designed these folksong-like works written by a lyricist from the epoch of Empfindsamkeit as parables. The musicians dedicated the benefit concert on November 26 to the memory of conductor Bernard Haitink, who died in October 2021 and was associated with the renowned orchestra for 61 years. The very long silence after the final chord was one of those "goosebump moments" that one goes to concerts for - and for which music is made in the first place. Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony, in particular, is understood as the composer's reaction to a heart ailment that was diagnosed shortly before he wrote the first drafts in the summer of 1908. He was in deep despair, but still scarcely aware of how few years he actually had left to live. With Mahler, it was always in and through music that he tried to come to terms with his life experiences and such topics as farewell, the meaning of existence, death, redemption, life after death and love. He wrote his Ninth Symphony in Dobbiaco, in a kind of creative frenzy, between 1909 and 1910. It's premiere took place in Vienna on June 26, 1912, when the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performed the work under Bruno Walter. He was in deep despair, but still scarcely aware of how few years he actually had left to live. With Mahler, it was always in and through music that he tried to come to terms with his life experiences and such topics as farewell, the meaning of existence, death, redemption, life after death and love. He wrote his Ninth Symphony in Dobbiaco, in a kind of creative frenzy, between 1909 and 1910. It's premiere took place in Vienna on June 26, 1912, when the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performed the work under Bruno Walter. Mahler did not witness the premiere of his last completed work - he had already died on May 18, 1911.

Kubelik takes up the cause of the Tchaikovsky symphony as if it were a declaration of the victory of the spirit, of freedom over all the forces of fate, was the verdict of a critic at the time on the closing concert of the Lucerne Summer Festival in 1968. The historical parallels to the current situation with the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine are unmistakable: A few days before Rafael Kubelik's performance, the socialist reform movement in Prague had been brutally crushed by the tanks of the Warsaw Pact. Kubelik, a Czech in exile who had chosen to live in Lucerne, not only pleaded for a break in artistic relations - a call that musicians such as Arthur Rubinstein, Yehudi Menuhin and Igor Stravinsky joined. He had also asked the Lucerne concert-goers for support for his "Foundation for Czechoslovak Emigrants after August 21, 1968". Kubelik's dramatically sharpened reading of Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony captivates the audience with strikingly abrupt changes in tempo and tone, and heightens the orchestral virtuosity in the finale to a furor. He had opened the guest performance of the New Philharmonia Orchestra, as the Philharmonia Orchestra temporarily called itself after a secession and refoundation, with Haydn's Symphony in E-flat Major Hob. 2022/8/12 発売輸入盤レーベル： FOOTPRINT収録曲：Simultan Krippenspiel - Christmas according to DADA - is an amazing version of the Gospel of Luke by the Swedish composer Par Olofsson for 12 voices, an instrumental ensemble and pre-recorded sound effects. This piece is based on a manuscript by Hugo Ball, prepared for his Grand Soiree in the early summer of 1916 and held at the Cabaret Voltaire. Astonishingly, one of the acts was a Nativity play: "Simultan Krippenspiel - Concert Bruitiste". The script consisted of one page of the traditional story of the birth of Christ from the Gospel of Luke, while the following page had lines for the familiar characters of Joseph, Mary, the Angel, the Shepherds, and so on - in gibberish. Sound and light effects were spelled out onomatopoetically and were performed by the actors with their voices or by using props.

Including numerous first recordings and the first complete album release of his setting of 14-year-old Helen Douglas Adam's enchanting Songs from the Elfin Pedlar, it throws revealing new light on an important but largely overlooked aspect of Stanford's output. Stanford, as his biographer and British music authority Jeremy Dibble comments in his authoritative notes, "was very much alive to the importance of children's participation in music" following the transformative introduction of signing to the school curriculum in 1870. This delightful compendium of songs intended for children reveals the composer to be as acutely sensitive to his eclectic choice of texts as to his intended audience. It features premiere recordings of the early, Robert Louis Stevenson-set A Child's Garland of Songs (Op.30), the mid-period Four Songs (Op.112) and later Six Songs (Op.175), together with seven other standalone songs, including the simple pastoral message of Summer's Rain and Winter's Snow and delightfully capricious Fairy Lures. SOMM's previous Stanford recordings include his String Quintets (SOMMCD 0623) and complete String Quartets (SOMMCD 0160, 0185, 0607) with the Dante Quartet, praised by Gramophone for their "ardent, alert and thoroughly lived-in performances", and Partsongs with the Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Choir led by Paul Spicer (SOMMCD 0128), which Limelight described as "excellent... beautifully sung". SOMM's world-premiere recording of The Travelling Companion (SOMMCD 274-2) was hailed "a landmark" by Gramophone, who lauded Songs of Faith, Love and Nonsense (SOMMCD 0627) as "a hugely enjoyable anthology... production values and presentation leave nothing to be desired".
