The Language of Grief【電子書籍】[ Alex Gallo-Brown ]

"The Language of Grief," a collection of poems in seven parts, took its author seven years to complete. The poems chronicle the sudden loss of his father to illness and the subsequent effect the loss had on his family, community, and psyche. As Gallo-Brown writes in the introduction, "This is a story about grief. There are exhortations of love here and gasps of fear, flashes of self-discovery followed by descents into confusion and rage." His lyrical, often darkly humorous poems show the ways that grief can shatter us--and ways we put ourselves back together.

Alex Gallo-Brown was born and raised in Seattle and holds a BFA in creative writing from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including The Rumpus, Salon, The Nervous Breakdown, The Collagist, Everyday Genius, The Monarch Review, and elsewhere. He has worked as a labor organizer, a caregiver for people with disabilities, and a farmhand, among other occupations. He lives in Atlanta. Find him at www.alexgallobrown.com.

Praise for The Language of Grief

"Alex Gallo-Brown's poems are the sad and beautiful tales of a lost son, lost father, and, yes, lost generation. But these poems are fun and smart. I love them."
-- Sherman Alexie, winner of the National Book Award

"The poet has lost his father, and the baffling, overwhelming grief is the sustained bass note under these songs of innocence and experience. To have arrived at his level of control while writing of a great blow, as well as of the uncontrollable plagues of youthーfeverish loneliness, ecstasy shading into disillusionーis remarkable."
-- Valerie Trueblood, author of Search Party and Marry or Burn

"Grief isn't always about death, rather it's a fundamental part of living a rich, meaningful life. Alex Gallo-Brown understands this on a deep level, and his masterful, lyrical poems convey the sad beauty of letting go."
-- Claire Bidwell Smith, author of The Rules of Inheritance

Of Civil Liberty【電子書籍】[ David Hume ]

THOSE who employ their pens on political subjects, free from party-rage, and party-prejudices, cultivate a science, which, of all others, contributes most to public utility, and even to the private satisfaction of those who addict themselves to the study of it. I am apt, however, to entertain a suspicion, that the world is still too young to fix many general truths in politics, which will remain true to the latest posterity. We have not as yet had experience of three thousand years; so that not only the art of reasoning is still imperfect in this science, as in all others, but we even want sufficient materials upon which we can reason. It is not fully known, what degree of refinement, either in virtue or vice, human nature is susceptible of; nor what may be expected of mankind from any great revolution in their education, customs, or principles. MACHIAVEL was certainly a great genius; but having confined his study to the furious and tyrannical governments of ancient times, or to the little disorderly principalities of ITALY, his reasonings especially upon monarchical government, have been found extremely defective; and there scarcely is any maxim in his prince, which subsequent experience has not entirely refuted. A weak prince,[1] says he, is incapable of receiving good counsel; for if he consult with several, he will not be able to choose among their different counsels. If he abandon himself to one, that minister may, perhaps, have capacity; but he will not long be a minister: He will be sure to dispossess his master, and place himself and his family upon the throne. I mention this, among many instances of the errors of that politician, proceeding, in a great measure, from his having lived in too early an age of the world, to be a good judge of political truth. Almost all the princes of EUROPE are at present governed by their ministers; and have been so for near two centuries; and yet no such event has ever happened, or can possibly happen.

The Bravest of the Brave, or, with Peterborough in Spain【電子書籍】[ George Alfred Henty ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Bravest of the Brave, or, with Peterborough in Spain【電子書籍】[ George Alfred Henty ]

There are few great leaders whose lives and actions have so completely fallen into oblivion as those of the Earl of Peterborough. His career as a general was a brief one, extending only over little more than a year, and yet in that time he showed a genius for warfare which has never been surpassed, and performed feats of daring worthy of taking their place among those of the leaders of chivalry. The fact that they have made so slight a mark upon history is due to several reasons. In the first place, they were overshadowed by the glory and successes of Marlborough; they were performed in a cause which could scarcely be said to be that of England, and in which the public had a comparatively feeble interest; the object, too, for which he fought was frustrated, and the war was an unsuccessful one, although from no fault on his part. But most of all, Lord Peterborough failed to attain that place in the list of British worthies to which his genius and his bravery should have raised him, because that genius was directed by no steady aim or purpose. Lord Peterborough is, indeed, one of the most striking instances in history of genius and talent wasted, and a life thrown away by want of fixed principle and by an inability or unwillingness to work with other men. He quarreled in turn with every party and with almost every individual with whom he came in contact; and while he himself was constantly changing his opinions, he was intolerant of all opinions differing from those which he at the moment held, and was always ready to express in the most open and offensive manner his contempt and dislike for those who differed from him. His eccentricities were great; he was haughty and arrogant, hasty and passionate; he denied his God, quarreled with his king, and rendered himself utterly obnoxious to every party in the state.

Laura and Julio【電子書籍】[ Juan Jose Millas ]

When their friend and neighbour Manuel is left an in coma after a car accident, Julio, a film set designer, and his wife, Laura, a masseuse in an urban spa, begin to journey down strange ways. The fact that they live in an apartment that is a mirror image of their neighbours has something to do with it, as does the fact that Julio become attracted to the land of shadows, a world that he first created to entertain a child but which then he develops for himself. Meanwhile, Laura enters into a strange correspondence of her own that lacks any recipient. Laura and Julio looks at the eternal triangle once again, although in this case the third party never makes an appearance. A self-proclaimed genius, his presence is so strongly felt that it undermines the existential essence of the married couple as they separately attempt to assimilate what he means to each of them. Millas has firmly rooted this comic and painful novel in his on-going investigation of the human individual, always in search of the panacea that will cure all its fears and discomforts, torn between submerging itself into a partnership or struggling free from one as a newly fledged personality, and all the time lost in a world of illusions and delusions. On its release in Spain, Laura and Julio rapidly ran up sales of over 150,000 copies, which left no one surprised. Juan Jose Millas is one of Spain’s most loved and respected authors, who appeals to a broad spectrum of readers and at a multitude of levels.

Bismarck: Some Secret Pages of His History (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Moritz Busch ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Bismarck: Some Secret Pages of His History (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Moritz Busch ]

The work which I now present to the German people contains a complete account of all the events of which I was a witness during my intercourse of over twenty years with Prince Bismarck and his entourage. Part of it is not entirely new, as I have embodied in it portions of the book published by me in 1878, under the title: Prince Bismarck and his People during the Franco-German War. I have, however, restored the numerous passages which it was then deemed expedient to omit, and I have also dispensed with the many modifications by which, at that time, certain asperities of language had to be toned down. The bulk of the present work consists of a detailed narrative of the whole period of my intercourse with the Prince both before and after the French campaign. I collected and noted down all these particulars respecting Prince Bismarck and his immediate supporters and assistants, in the first place for my own use, and secondly as a contribution to the character and history of the Political Regenerator of Germany. The sole object of the diary which forms the basis of this work was to serve as a record of the whole truth so far as I had been able to ascertain it with my own eyes and ears. Any other object was out of the question, as it was impossible that I could desire to deceive myself. Subsequently, when I thought of publishing my notes, I was fully conscious of my responsibility towards history, the interests of which could not be promoted by material that had been coloured or garbled for party purposes. I wished neither to be an eulogist nor a censor. To my mind, panegyric was superfluous, and fault-finding was for me an impossibility. A tendency to the sensational is foreign to my nature, and I leave the pleasure to be derived from grand spectacular shows to lovers of the theatre. I desired to record the mental and other characteristics which our first Chancellor presented to me under such and such circumstances, thus helping to complete, and at times to rectify, the conception of his whole nature that has been formed in the public mind from his political activity. The profound reverence which I feel for the genius of the hero, and my patriotic gratitude for his achievements, have not deterred me from communicating numerous details which will be displeasing to many persons. These particulars, however, are part of the historic character of the personality whom I am describing. The gods alone are free from error, passion, and changes of disposition. They alone have no seamy side and no contradictions. Even the sun and moon show spots and blemishes, but notwithstanding these they remain magnificent celestial orbs. The picture produced out of the materials which I have here brought together may present harsh and rough features, but it has hardly a single ignoble trait. Its crudeness only adds to its truth to nature, its individuality, and its clearness of outline. This figure does not float in an ethereal atmosphere, it is firmly rooted in earth and breathes of real life, yet it conveys a sense of something superhuman. It must furthermore be remembered that many of the bitter remarks, such as those made previous to March, 1890, were the result of temporary irritation, while others were perfectly justified. The strong self-confidence manifested in some of these utterances, and the angry expression of that need for greater power and more liberty of action, common to all men of genius and energetic character, arose from the consciousness that, while he alone knew the true object to be pursued and the fitting means for its achievement, his knowledge could not be applied because the right of final decision on all occasions belonged by hereditary privilege to more or less mediocre and narrow minds.

The Green Carnation【電子書籍】[ Robert Smythe Hichens ]

He slipped a green carnation into his evening coat, fixed it in its place with a pin, and looked at himself in the glass, the long glass that stood near the window of his London bedroom. The summer evening was so bright that he could see his double clearly, even though it was just upon seven o'clock. There he stood in his favourite and most characteristic attitude, with his left knee slightly bent, and his arms hanging at his sides, gazing, as a woman gazes at herself before she starts for a party. The low and continuous murmur of Piccadilly, like the murmur of a flowing tide on a smooth beach, stole to his ears monotonously, and inclined him insensibly to a certain thoughtfulness. Floating through the curtained window the soft lemon light sparkled on the silver backs of the brushes that lay on the toilet-table, on the dressing-gown of spun silk that hung from a hook behind the door, on the great mass of gloire de Dijon roses, that dreamed in an ivory-white bowl set on the writing-table of ruddy-brown wood. It caught the gilt of the boy's fair hair and turned it into brightest gold, until, despite the white weariness of his face, the pale fretfulness of his eyes, he looked like some angel in a church window designed by Burne-Jones, some angel a little blas? from the injudicious conduct of its life. He frankly admired himself as he watched his reflection, occasionally changing his pose, presenting himself to himself, now full face, now three-quarters face, leaning backward or forward, advancing one foot in its silk stocking and shining shoe, assuming a variety of interesting expressions. In his own opinion he was very beautiful, and he thought it right to appreciate his own qualities of mind and of body. He hated those fantastic creatures who are humble even in their self-communings, cowards who dare not acknowledge even to themselves how exquisite, how delicately fashioned they are. Quite frankly he told other people that he was very wonderful, quite frankly he avowed it to himself. There is a nobility in fearless truthfulness, is there not? and about the magic of his personality he could never be induced to tell a lie. It is so interesting to be wonderful, to be young, with pale gilt hair and blue eyes, and a face in which the shadows of fleeting expressions come and go, and a mouth like the mouth of Narcissus. It is so interesting to oneself. Surely one's beauty, one's attractiveness, should be one's own greatest delight. It is only the stupid, and those who still cling to Exeter Hall as to a Rock of Ages, who are afraid, or ashamed, to love themselves, and to express that love, if need be. Reggie Hastings, at least, was not ashamed. The mantel-piece in his sitting-room bore only photographs of himself, and he explained this fact to inquirers by saying that he worshipped beauty. Reggie was very frank. When he could not be witty, he often told the naked truth; and truth, without any clothes on, frequently passes for epigram. It is daring, and so it seems clever. Reggie was considered very clever by his friends, but more clever by himself. He knew that he was great, and he said so often in Society. And Society smiled and murmured that it was a pose. Everything is a pose nowadays, especially genius. This evening Reggie stood before the mirror till the S?vres clock on the chimneypiece gently chimed seven. Then he drew out of their tissue paper a pair of lavender gloves, and pressed the electric bell. "Call me a hansom, Flynn," he said to his valet

Famous Affinities of History (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Lyndon Orr ]

of all love stories that are known to human history, The love story of Antony and Cleopatra has been for nineteen centuries The most remarkable. It has tasked The resources of The plastic and The graphic arts. It has been made The Theme of poets and of prose narrators. It has appeared and reappeared in a thousand forms, and it appeals as much to The imagination to-day as it did when Antony deserted his almost victorious troops and hastened in a swift galley from Actium in pursuit of Cleopatra. The wonder of The story is explained by its extraordinary nature. Many men in private life have lost fortune and fame for The love of woman. Kings have incurred The odium of Their people, and have cared nothing for it in comparison with The joys of sense that come from The lingering caresses and clinging kisses. Cold-blooded statesmen, such as Parnell, have lost The leadership of Their party and have gone down in history with a clouded name because of The fascination exercised upon Them by some woman, often far from beautiful, and yet possessing The mysterious power which makes The triumphs of statesmanship seem slight in comparison with The swiftly flying hours of pleasure. But in The case of Antony and Cleopatra alone do we find a man flinging away not merely The triumphs of civic honors or The headship of a state, but much more than TheseーThe mastery of what was practically The worldーin answer to The promptings of a woman's will. Hence The story of The Roman triumvir and The Egyptian queen is not like any Other story that has yet been told. The sacrifice involved in it was so overwhelming, so instantaneous, and so complete as to set this narrative above all Others. Shakespeare's genius has touched it with The glory of a great imagination. Dryden, using it in The finest of his plays, expressed its nature in The title "All for Love."

My Wars Are Laid Away in Books The Life of Emily Dickinson【電子書籍】[ Alfred Habegger ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】My Wars Are Laid Away in Books The Life of Emily Dickinson【電子書籍】[ Alfred Habegger ]

Emily Dickinson, probably the most loved and certainly the greatest of American poets, continues to be seen as the most elusive. One reason she has become a timeless icon of mystery for many readers is that her developmental phases have not been clarified. In this exhaustively researched biography, Alfred Habegger presents the first thorough account of Dickinson’s growth?a richly contextualized story of genius in the process of formation and then in the act of overwhelming production.

Building on the work of former and contemporary scholars, My Wars Are Laid Away in Books brings to light a wide range of new material from legal archives, congregational records, contemporary women's writing, and previously unpublished fragments of Dickinson’s own letters. Habegger discovers the best available answers to the pressing questions about the poet: Was she lesbian? Who was the person she evidently loved? Why did she refuse to publish and why was this refusal so integral an aspect of her work? Habegger also illuminates many of the essential connection sin Dickinson’s story: between the decay of doctrinal Protestantism and the emergence of her riddling lyric vision; between her father’s political isolation after the Whig Party’s collapse and her private poetic vocation; between her frustrated quest for human intimacy and the tuning of her uniquely seductive voice.

The definitive treatment of Dickinson’s life and times, and of her poetic development, My Wars Are Laid Away in Books shows how she could be both a woman of her era and a timeless creator. Although many aspects of her life and work will always elude scrutiny, her living, changing profile at least comes into focus in this meticulous and magisterial biography.

Delivering a searing indictment of the political leaders who have led us astray, Scarborough inspires conservatives to reclaim their heritage by drawing upon the strength of the movement’s rich history.
With independent thinking and straight talk, Scarborough explains:

? How Washington and Wall Street conspired to create the housing bubble that caused America’s financial meltdown

? How the “candidate of change” has not only maintained but accelerated the reckless spending policies that led us to this historic economic collapse

? How Washington’s bailout culture will cripple America’s future if left unchecked

? How Barack Obama’s stimulus plan devolved into a socialist spending spree that would make FDR and LBJ shudder

?
On September 2, 1941, Salvador and Gala Dali were photographed as the honored guests and creative force behind the party of the century, “A Surrealistic Night in an Enchanted Forest” at Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California. The book chronicles the behind the scenes planning and photographs not seen since the early 1940’s by capturing the essences of the iconic party designed by Dali highlighted by newspaper and magazine quotes. Included in the photographs are the elaborate preparations of the Bali Room with Dali assisting with the decorations for the party. There are photographs of Gala and Salvador getting dress in their costumes with Dali’s explanation of his costume’s conception. During the party, Gala (Princess of the Forest) is seen in a huge bed, where she lays in repose on top of a very long dining table with a six month old lion cub in her lap. Bob Hope, 17 year old Gloria Vanderbilt, California Poet Robinsons Jeffers and the other guests were literally and figuratively to dine and feast in bed with Gala. The photographs reveal the party guests’ outlandish outfits, the scandalous wrecked car with the nude sleeping woman, and the “Dance of Death” which Dali also choreographed. The Buy Side A Wall Street Trader's Tale of Spectacular Excess【電子書籍】[ Turney Duff ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Buy Side A Wall Street Trader's Tale of Spectacular Excess【電子書籍】[ Turney Duff ]

The Buy Side is Turney Duff's high-adrenaline journey through the trading underworld, as well as a searing look at an after-hours Wall Street culture where sex and drugs are the quid pro quo and a billion isn't enough.

In the mid-2000's, Turney Duff was, to all appearances, the very picture of American success. One of Wall Street's hottest traders, he was a rising star with Raj Rajaratnam's legendary Galleon Group before forging his own path. What few knew was that the key to Turney's remarkable success wasn't a super-genius IQ or family connections but rather a winning personality - because the real money wasn't made on the trading floor or behind a computer screen, but in whispered deals in the city's most exclusive nightspots, surrounded by the best drugs and hottest women. For Turney, this created a perilously seductive cycle: the harder he partied, the more connected and successful he became, which meant he could party even harder. In time, he became a walking paradox, an addictive mess after hours, and King of the Street from nine to five. Along the way, he learned some important lessons about himself, and the too-wild-to-believe world of Wall Street trading.

In The Buy Side, the money is plentiful and the after-hours indulgence even more so, which has proved to be a bestselling and box office winning combination, as the success of The Wolf of Wall Street attests. Fans of Martin Scorsese's film and Michael Lewis's Liar's Poker and The Big Short will want to take a walk on The Buy Side.

A window onto the lives of the Romantic poets through the re-creation of one legendary night in 1817.

The author of the highly acclaimed Posthumous Keats, praised as “full of…those fleeting moments we call genius” (Washington Post), now provides a window into the lives of Keats and his contemporaries in this brilliant new work.

On December 28, 1817, the painter Benjamin Robert Haydon hosted what he referred to in his diaries and autobiography as the “immortal dinner.” He wanted to introduce his young friend John Keats to the great William Wordsworth and to celebrate with his friends his most important historical painting thus far, “Christ’s Entry into Jerusalem,” in which Keats, Wordsworth, and Charles Lamb (also a guest at the party) appeared. After thoughtful and entertaining discussions of poetry and art and their relation to Enlightenment science, the party evolved into a lively, raucous evening. This legendary event would prove to be a highlight in the lives of these immortals.

A beautiful and profound work of extraordinary brilliance, The Immortal Evening regards the dinner as a lens through which to understand the lives and work of these legendary artists and to contemplate the immortality of genius.

Winner of the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism

The Daemon Knows Literary Greatness and the American Sublime【電子書籍】[ Harold Bloom ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Daemon Knows Literary Greatness and the American Sublime【電子書籍】[ Harold Bloom ]

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ? NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST AND KIRKUS REVIEWS

Hailed as “the indispensable critic” by The New York Review of Books, Harold BloomーNew York Times bestselling writer and Sterling Professor of Humanities at Yale Universityーhas for decades been sharing with readers and students his genius and passion for understanding literature and explaining why it matters. Now he turns at long last to his beloved writers of our national literature in an expansive and mesmerizing book that is one of his most incisive and profoundly personal to date. A product of five years of writing and a lifetime of reading and scholarship, The Daemon Knows may be Bloom’s most masterly book yet.

Pairing Walt Whitman with Herman Melville, Ralph Waldo Emerson with Emily Dickinson, Nathaniel Hawthorne with Henry James, Mark Twain with Robert Frost, Wallace Stevens with T. S. Eliot, and William Faulkner with Hart Crane, Bloom places these writers’ works in conversation with one another, exploring their relationship to the “daemon”ーthe spark of genius or Orphic museーin their creation and helping us understand their writing with new immediacy and relevance. It is the intensity of their preoccupation with the sublime, Bloom proposes, that distinguishes these American writers from their European predecessors.

As he reflects on a lifetime lived among the works explored in this book, Bloom has himself, in this magnificent achievement, created a work touched by the daemon.

Praise for The Daemon Knows

“Enrapturing . . . radiant . . . intoxicating . . . Harold Bloom, who bestrides our literary world like a willfully idiosyncratic colossus, belongs to the party of rapture.”ーCynthia Ozick, The New York Times Book Review

“The capstone to a lifetime of thinking, writing and teaching . . . The primary strength of The Daemon Knows is the brilliance and penetration of the connections Bloom makes among the great writers of the past, the shrewd sketching of intellectual feuds or oppositions that he calls agons. . . . Bloom’s books are like a splendid map of literature, a majestic aerial view that clarifies what we cannot see from the ground.”ーThe Washington Post

“Audacious . . . The Yale literary scholar has added another remarkable treatise to his voluminous body of work.”ーThe Huffington Post

“The sublime The Daemon Knows is a veritable feast for the general reader (me) as well as the advanced (I assume) one.”ーJohn Ashbery

“Mesmerizing.”***ーNew York Journal of Books***

“Bloom is a formidable critic, an extravagant intellect.”***ーChicago Tribune***

“As always, Bloom conveys the intimate, urgent, compelling sense of why it matters that we read these canonical authors.”ーKirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Few people write criticism as nakedly confident as Bloom’s any more.”ーThe Guardian (U.K.)

The SS General and Die Glocke【電子書籍】[ Terry Meyer ]

The General and Die Glocke weaves a tale of mystery and intrigue based on speculation of true historic events when Jim Sawyer, a local newspaper reporter, witnesses a military convoy hauling off a crashed UFO under the cloak of top secrecy. Civilian witnesses to the crash reported the object as bell shaped and “not of this world”. As he tries to further investigate the incident, his inquiries are stonewalled by the police and military who only offer him a suspicious coverup story. At wit's end, Sawyer doesn't know where to turn. To his surprise, he is surreptitiously contacted by Colonel Bill Watson, a retired military officer who worked for the Counter Intelligence Corp during WWII. He had read Sawyer's report about a crashed UFO that appeared in the national newspapers and knew what it was. The Colonel tells Sawyer about the American military capturing a treasure trove of Nazi research and development into top secret advanced wonder weapons and their covert dealings with the evil genius, SS General Hans Kammler, who was in charge of these programs. It appears that General Kammler disappeared without a trace at the end of WWII with his prize project called Die Glocke or The Bell. The Bell was assigned the highest level of security by the SS as “war ending” and was the culmination of German science into anti-gravity propulsion, time warping, and weapons of mass destruction. Kammler was a brutal and ambitious taskmaster little known outside theThird Reich inner circle. By the end of WWII, he had risen to be one of the most powerful and influential officers in the SS and the Nazi Party. He was also responsible for the deaths of thousands of slave laborers who unmercifully toiled on his projects. As Germany was falling in defeat, Kammler gathered all the valuable files, records and prototypes including The Bell from top SS research centers and fled to a secret base in Norway. He made a covert deal with the American military to exchange everything in his possession for his freedom and anonymity. This would put the American military decades ahead of the Soviets in weapons research and development. With the deployment of stealth aircraft, nuclear armed ICBM rockets, night optics, surface to air missiles, anti-gravity propulsion, and many more unimaginable devices based on German science, the U.S. had what it needed to counter any growing Soviet threat. It was only decades later when Jim Murphy learned of the breakthrough development in aviation reconnaissance stemming from the science behind The Bell. It was something beyond his imagination and ultimately cost him his life.

'A great writer, perhaps the greatest living in Britain today' WILL SELF
____________________________
A dazzlingly original and expansive tale about the possibilities of storytelling from the celebrated Scottish author of Poor Things and Lanark.

Old Men in Love, like The Arabian Nights, is about a storyteller whose stories contain other stories. In his trademark way, Alasdair Gray playfully blends narrative styles and locations; Periclean Athens, Renaissance Florence, Victorian Somerset mingle with Britain under the New Labour Party, viewed from the West End of Glasgow. More than half is fact and the rest possible, but it must be read to be believed.
____________________________
'A necessary genius' ALI SMITH

'One of the brightest intellectual and creative lights Scotland has known in modern times' NICOLA STURGEON

'The greatest Scottish novelist since Sir Walter Scott' ANTHONY BURGESS

? Dakota Franklin WINS Best Action/Adventure at Best Independent EBook Awards

? Dakota Franklin's series RUTHLESS TO WIN has already won awards and enthusiastic reviews for fascinating characters and rivetting action. All have all been international bestsellers.

GOD’S SCOFFLAWS by Dakota Franklin

Grant Scarfe, a mathematician of genius, steadily on his way to the top as an engineer at Porsche, has led a protected life of privilege. It follows naturally that when Armitage, the premier racing house of the world, decides to throw a million dollar party at the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man, they should ask Grant if he wants to spend his sabbatical year building motorbikes for Billy Crawshaw to race.

'A dead engineer would crawl out of the grave to race Billy Crawshaw in the TT.'

But Lydia Simpresi, Armitage’s treasured sponsor, to whom no one ever says no, decides that the once-modest party at the TT will be a homage to her late father. That piles on the pressure. And then Billy decides, on a whim, that Grant should put the team in Northern Ireland where road racing is the national sportーright after terrorism. That makes the pressure intolerable, because each of the opposing terrorist groups, and their equally violent splinters, views Armitage as ‘on our patch’, couriers of drugs and money to fight the forthcoming electionーand of detonators for bombs.

'It was only a small bomb. A warning that the next one will kill some of us.'

Then there is the police, traffic cops bumped up for their political allegiance, incapable of protecting Grant’s staff, more interested in ensuring that the Harringtons sent to beef up his security don’t cause a renewed outbreak of The Troubles.

‘Joanne and those ex-commandos all by themselves are a moving small-scale war.’

Patton, the only competent cop, is a British anti-terrorist plant. He intends to force Grant to go along with both groups of terrorists and then to testify against them, clearly a suicide mission.

That isn’t all. The internal politics of Armitage are such that if Grant in his motorbike ‘sideshow’ puts a scratch on Billy, Armitage’s Le Mans 24 Hours starter and star, Mallory and Jack Armitage will ruin his career.

Grant’s only solace is his growing love affair with Harry Bingham, his Operations Director.

'In her red leather team jacket she looks like Vogue’s idea of a biker’s moll.'

On the Isle of Man for the TT, Grant discovers that his racing team’s trucks will be used to carry detonators for bombs into Britain. But he has a plan to put all his tormentors at each other’s throats ー as soon as he has survived the dangerous TT with Billy intact.

Then the terrorists take Harry to force Grant to carry their bomb into position for them, and everything explodes in uncontrolled violence on the Snaefell Mountain between the competing terrorist groups, Patton and his anti-terrorist police, and the Harringtons helping Grant recover Harry.

***
“I thought the characters were great. I was swept along...a cracking good read.”
ー Joo's Book Reviews

“I thoroughly enjoyed this book ー in fact, I started reading it again straight after I'd finished it.”
ー L. Rumbold

"A wonderful story full of action and remarkable detail."
ー Boyd S Drew

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (September 24, 1896 ? December 21, 1940) was an American author of novels and short stories, whose works are the paradigmatic writings of the Jazz Age, a term he coined. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. He finished four novels: This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby (his most famous), and Tender Is the Night. A fifth, unfinished novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon, was published posthumously. Fitzgerald also wrote many short stories that treat themes of youth and promise along with age and despair.

Fitzgerald's work has been adapted into films many times. His short story, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, was the basis for a 2008 film. Tender is the Night was filmed in 1962, and made into a television miniseries in 1985. The Beautiful and Damned was filmed in 1922 and 2010. The Great Gatsby has been the basis for numerous films of the same name, spanning nearly 90 years; 1926, 1949, 1974, 2000, and 2013 adaptations. In addition, Fitzgerald's own life from 1937 to 1940 was dramatized in 1958 in Beloved Infidel.

In this ebook:

The Great Gatsby

Tender is the Night

The Beautiful and the Damned

This Side of Paradise

Flappers and Philosophers

Tales of the Jazz Age

The Complete Pat Hobby Stories

Pat Hobby's Christmas Wish

A Man in the Way

"Boil Some Water--Lots of It"

Teamed with Genius

Pat Hobby and Orson Welles

Pat Hobby's Secret

Pat Hobby, Putative Father

The Homes of the Stars

Pat Hobby Does His Bit

Pat Hobby's Preview

No Harm Trying

A Patriotic Short

On the Trail of Pat Hobby

Fun in an Artist's Studio

Two Old-Timers

Mightier than the Sword

Pat Hobby's College Days

Collected Stories

A freeze-out

A new leaf

A nice quiet place

A night at the fair

A short trip home

Absolution

Afternoon of an author

An alcoholic case

At your age

The baby party

Babylon revisited

Basil and Cleopatra

Basil: The freshest boy

The Bridal Party

The bowl

The captured shadow

Crazy sunday

Desing in plaster

Dice, Brassknuckles & guitar

Emotional Bankruptcy

Family in the wind

The fiend

Financing Finnegan

First blood

Forcing ahead

Gretchen’s forty winks

He thinks he’s wonderful

The hotel child

“I didn’t get over”

Jacob’s ladder

Josephine: A woman with a past

The last of the belles

The lost decade

Love in the night

Magnetism

Majesty

More than just a house

News of ParisーFifteen years ago

The night at Chancellorsville

One interne

One trip abroad

Outside the Cabinet-maker’s

The perfect life

Rags Martin-Jones and the Prince of Wales

The rich boy

The rough crossing

The scandal detectives

“The sensible thing”

Six of one

Two wrongs

What a handsome pair!

Winter dreams

The swimmers
