Die Philosophen Hobbes und Locke lebten beide im 17. Jahrhundert in England. Zu dieser Zeit entwickelten sie Theorien zur Gr?ndung eines Staates, zur Legitimation von Macht und z?hlen zu den bedeutungsvollsten Vertretern der Vertragstheorie. In den Werken 'Leviathan- oder Stoff, Form und Gewalt eines kirchlichen und b?rgerlichen Staates' und 'Zwei Abhandlungen ?ber die Regierung' besch?ftigen sich beide mit der politischen Stabilit?t und der Legitimation des Politischen sowie mit Elementen des Kontraktualismus. Auch stellten sich beide Theoretiker die Frage nach dem Sinn eines Staates f?r uns Menschen. Zu der Lebzeit der beiden Theoretiker herrschten in ganz Europa gewaltsame Auseinandersetzungen, wie von 1618- 1648 der Drei?igj?hrige Krieg. Schon zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts existiert zwischen dem englischen K?nigtum und B?rgertum ein Machtkampf bei welchem sich die Gegens?tze versch?rfen und schlie?lich der B?rgerkrieg ausbricht. 1649 wird die Monarchie abgeschaffen und K?nig Karl I. hingerichtet. Das 'Commonwealth' unter der F?hrung von Oliver Cromwell etabliert sich (Schneider, Thomas: Hobbes, Thomas, in: Metzlers Philosophenlexikon, Stuttgart 1989, S.363). Doch obwohl Thomas Hobbes 44 Jahre vor John Locke geboren wurde, wurden beide Philosophen von den politischen Verh?ltnissen dieser Zeit gepr?gt.
