The Truth About Camp David The Untold Story About the Collapse of the Middle East Peace Process【電子書籍】[ Clayton E Swisher ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Truth About Camp David The Untold Story About the Collapse of the Middle East Peace Process【電子書籍】[ Clayton E Swisher ]

The collapse of both sets of Arab-Israeli negotiations in 2000 led not only to recrimination and bloodshed, with the outbreak of the second intifada, but to the creation of a new myth. Syrian and Palestinian intransigence was blamed for the current disastrous state of affairs, as both parties rejected a "generous" peace offering from the Israelis that would have brought peace to the region. The Truth About Camp David shatters that myth. Based on the riveting, eyewitness accounts of more than forty direct participants involved in the latest rounds of Arab-Israeli negotiations, including the Camp David 2000 summit, former federal investigator-turned-investigative journalist Clayton E. Swisher provides a compelling counter-narrative to the commonly accepted history. The Truth About Camp David details the tragic inner workings of the Clinton Administration's negotiating mayhem, their eleventh hour blunders and miscalculations, and their concluding decision to end the Oslo process with blame and disengagement. It is not only a fascinating historical look at Middle East politics on the brink of disaster, but a revelatory portrait of how all-too-human American political considerations helped facilitate the present crisis.

Political Repression Courts and the Law【電子書籍】[ Linda Camp Keith ]

The world seems to have reached agreement on a set of ideals regarding state human rights behavior and the appropriate institutions to promote and protect those ideals. The global script for state legitimacy calls for a written constitution or the equivalent with an embedded bill of rights, democratic processes and institutions, and increasingly, a judicial check on state power to protect human rights. While the progress toward universal formal adherence to this global model is remarkable, Linda Camp Keith argues that the substantive meaning of this progress is much less clear. In Political Repression, she seeks to answer two key questions: Why do states make formal commitments to democratic processes and human rights? What effect do these commitments have on actual state behavior, especially political repression?

The book begins with a thorough exploration of a variety of tools of state repression and presents evidence for substantial formal acceptance of international human rights norms in constitutional documents as well as judicial independence. Keith finds that these institutions reflect the diffusion of global norms and standards, the role of transnational networks of nongovernmental organizations, and an electoral logic in which regimes seek to protect their future interests. Economic liberalism, on the other hand, decreases the likelihood that states adopt or maintain these provisions. She demonstrates that the level of judicial independence is influenced by constitutional structures and that levels of judicial independence subsequently achieved in turn diminish the probability of state repression of a variety of rights. She also finds strong evidence that rights provisions may indeed serve as a constraint on state repression, even when controlling for many other factors.

The Time beneath the Concrete Palestine between Camp and Colony【電子書籍】[ Nasser Abourahme ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Time beneath the Concrete Palestine between Camp and Colony【電子書籍】[ Nasser Abourahme ]

In The Time beneath the Concrete, Nasser Abourahme argues that settler colonialism is always as much an attempt to conquer time as it is to conquer land. Taking as his primary object Palestinian refugee camps, created in the fallout of the eliminatory violence of Israel’s founding, Abourahme shows how these camps become the primary place where settler colonial attempts to dominate space and time encounter Indigenous refusal. Seen from the camps, Israel becomes a settler colonial project defined by its inability to move past the pastーa project stuck at its foundational moment of conquest. At the same time, the Palestinian insistence on return is a refusal to abide by the closure of the past into settler futurity. Palestinian struggle does not just happen in the open time of dispossession; it happens over this time. That struggle, Abourahme demonstrates, is a form of anticolonial refusal that draws its power not from any decisive finality, but precisely from irresolution and keeping time open.

Camp Forrest was a training, induction, and combatant prisoner-of-war (POW) facility located on the outskirts of Tullahoma, Tennessee. It was a self-sustaining city where over 70,000 soldiers were stationed and approximately 12,000 civilians were employed throughout World War II. In 1942, the camp transitioned to an enemy alien internment camp and was one of the first civilian internment camps in the United States. By the middle of 1943, it had transitioned into a POW camp and housed primarily German and Italian prisoners. After the war ended, the base was decommissioned and dismantled in 1946. In 1951, the area was recommissioned and expanded into the US Air Force's Arnold Engineering Development Complex. Few remains of this important World War II facility exist today; however, the images within provide a glimpse into the effects and realities of a global war on American soil.

Mexico What Everyone Needs to Know?【電子書籍】[ Roderic Ai Camp ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Mexico What Everyone Needs to Know?【電子書籍】[ Roderic Ai Camp ]

Today all would agree that Mexico and the United States have never been closer--that the fates of the two republics are inextricably intertwined. It has become an intimate part of life in almost every community in the United States, through immigration, imported produce, business ties, or illegal drugs. It is less a neighbor than a sibling; no matter what our differences, it is intricately a part of our existence. In this outstanding contribution to Oxford's acclaimed series, What Everyone Needs to Know?, Roderic Ai Camp gives readers the most essential information about our sister republic to the south. Camp organizes chapters around major themes--security and violence, economic development, foreign relations, the colonial heritage, and more. He asks questions that take us beyond the headlines: Why does Mexico have so much drug violence? What was the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement? How democratic is Mexico? Who were Benito Ju?rez and Pancho Villa? What is the PRI (the Institutional Revolutionary Party)? The answers are sometimes surprising. Despite ratification of NAFTA, for example, Mexico has fallen behind Brazil and Chile in economic growth and rates of poverty. Camp explains that lack of labor flexibility, along with low levels of transparency and high levels of corruption, make Mexico less competitive than some other Latin American countries. The drug trade, of course, enhances corruption and feeds on poverty; approximately 450,000 Mexicans now work in this sector. But Camp reveals that President Calder?n's recent assault on narcotics smugglers--and the violence resulting from it--may have actually lessened the government's control of parts of the country and national institutions. Brisk, clear, and informed, Mexico: What Everyone Needs To Know? offers a valuable primer for anyone interested in the past, present, and future of our neighbor to the South. What Everyone Needs to Know? is a registered trademark of Oxford University Press.

Dachau Concentration Camp A Guide to the former Concentration Camp and the Memorial Site【電子書籍】[ Nicolas Simon Mitchell ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Dachau Concentration Camp A Guide to the former Concentration Camp and the Memorial Site【電子書籍】[ Nicolas Simon Mitchell ]

Hundreds of thousands of people from all continents visit Dachau Memorial Site each year. Any visitor to the Memorial Site will find that the Memorial Site bookshop stocks two publications worthy of particular mention, both deal at length with the history of the former concentration camp; Stanislav Zamecnik's ,outstanding, That Was Dachau and the superb Catalogue for the Exhibition: The Dachau Concentration Camp edited by Barbara Distel. Notwithstanding, there is little, recently written and reasonably priced literature which deals in a clear and concise manner with key themes. This short guidebook was written with two premises in mind. Firstly, to fill a gap in the literature already available and secondly to deal with issues often raised in the form of questions on the `open tour' of the Memorial Site. Visitors were keen to understand who was imprisoned and why, they were curious to know how prisoners arrived and the procedure of being processed into `protective custody' at the concentration camp. Furthermore, they were curious as to the significance of the religious and non-denominational memorials and the importance of Baracke X. The book is designed to address these themes and to be used either as an aid when making a visit to the Memorial Site or it can be read independently as a complement to the existing literature. It is written in an accessible style with accounts of former prisoners used to illustrate the conditions which existed within the concentration camp.

From Yom Kippur to Camp David: The Middle East in History The Middle East in History, #11【電子書籍】[ Hui Wang ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】From Yom Kippur to Camp David: The Middle East in History The Middle East in History, #11【電子書籍】[ Hui Wang ]

From Yom Kippur to Camp David: The Middle East in History, is my attempt to tell the story of the modern Middle East through the people who were forced to make impossible choices. Gamal Abdel Nasser, Anwar Sadat, Golda Meir, Menachem Begin, Henry Kissinger, King Faisal, King Hussein, Richard Nixon, and Jimmy Carter are not presented here as distant legends on a page. They appear as real, flawed actors caught in moments when delay, pride, or a single misjudgment could shove the region into warーor pull it back from the brink.

The book moves from the shock of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre to the ignored warnings that preceded the Yom Kippur War, and along the secret, consequential paths that drew Egypt and Israel back onto the battlefield. Readers are taken inside Operation Badr ー the daring crossing of the Suez Canal that shattered the Bar-Lev Line ー into the chaos of tank battles in the Valley of Tears, and into Ariel Sharon's risky, high-stakes maneuver at the Chinese Farm. These chapters are less about heroic slogans and more about confusion, fear, and the brutal speed at which history can turn.

War, though, is only part of the story. I trace how the conflict spilled into Washington and Moscow and into living rooms around the globe. When King Faisal helped lead the Arab oil embargo in 1973, energy instantly became a political blunt instrument ー not the act of one man alone but of a coalition of oil-producing states ー and overnight the balance of power shifted. The embargo, the ensuing energy crisis, and those harsh winters of rationing and blackout scares laid bare how deeply the Middle East had come to touch everyday life far beyond its borders. Diplomacy, money, and control of energy proved as decisive as tanks and aircraft.

Inside Egypt and Israel, the pressure looked different but was no less severe. Sadat's deliberate break with Nasser's legacy ー his diplomatic pivot and his economic opening, the infitah ー carried big hopes and big risks. Cuts to subsidies and the strains of reform fed bread shortages and, two years later, the 1977 bread riots, while shortages in schools and public services sharpened popular anger. In Israel, the rise of Likud upended decades of Labor dominance, reshaped domestic politics, and forced a rethinking of what "peace" might mean politically and practically. Those internal battles mattered as much as any front line ー leaders were fighting enemies abroad while losing patience and trust at home.

The journey from Jerusalem to Camp David was anything but a smooth march toward peace. It was tense, personal, and shot through with uncertainty. This book doesn't ask you to admire every decision by Anwar Sadat, Menachem Begin, or Jimmy Carter; it asks you to see how fragile the path really was, how few exits there were, and why the price of peace in the Middle East was paid not merely in treatiesーbut in isolation, fury, and blood.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Buried Alive The True Story of the Chilean Mining Disaster and the Extraordinary Rescue at Camp Hope【電子書籍】[ Manuel Pino Toro ]

The inside story of the thirty-three Chilean miners trapped 2,300 feet underground that captivated the world
On August 5, 2010, a tunnel in the gold and copper mine in the Atacama Desert in Chile collapsed, with all of its miners trapped underground. For days, the families waited breathlessly as percussion drills searched out signs of life. Finally, a note came back from below--the miners were alive and safe. Now the rescue crew needed to burrow through 2300 feet of solid rock to get them out.
For nine weeks, the world watched as Chile threw all of its resources into the effort. Televisions flashed images of worried families holding vigil night and day and of Chile's newly elected President Pinera making their recovery his personal crusade. What the cameras didn't reveal was the behind-the-scenes intrigue: the corruption that led to faulty construction of the tunnel in the first place; how the men lived in a muddy and humid environment where the temperature was unbearably hot; how the rescue effort became a political campaign to raise the president's sagging numbers; and the abundant hope necessary to sustain the men in their underground captivity.
Author Manuel Pino takes us into his native Chile and, drawing on direct access to the miners and their families, weaves a rich narrative of extraordinary survival and triumph.

The "fascinating" story of a First World War prisoner of war camp which held captured German personnel in the very heart of the English countryside ( Books Monthly).
Richard Pursehouse first became aware of the existence of a camp while walking over Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, finding sewer covers in what appeared to be uninhabited heathland. Intrigued, the author set out to investigate the mystery and discovered that the sewers were for two Army campsーBrocton and Rugeleyーthat had been constructed for soldiers training during the First World War. What he also found, however, was that the Brocton Camp site also included a segregated autonomous prisoner of war camp.
With the aid of an old postcard, Richard was able to identify the exact location and layout of the long-lost camp. His research continued until he had accumulated an enormous amount of detail about the camp and life for its prisoners. He found a file by the Camp Commandant, Swiss Legation correspondence, stories in newspapers, letters and diaries, and received photographs from interested individuals. Amongst his finds was a box holding scores of fascinating letters sent home by an administration clerk while he was working at the camp.
During his investigations, Richard also learned of attempted murders and escapes (including the only escapee to make it back to Germany), deaths, theftsーand a fatal scandal. The letters, documents and diaries reveal how the prisoners coped with incarceration, as well as their treatment, both in terms of camp conditions and their medical needs.
The result is a unique insight into what life was like inside a British Prisoner of War camp during the First World War.

This WWII true crime history reveals a shocking story of murder inside an Arizona POW campーand the U.S. military's controversial response.

Though Arizona was far from any theater of battle during World War II, the grim realities of combat were brought home with the construction of POW camps. Located outside Phoenix, Camp Papago Park became famous for its prisoners' attempted escape through the Faustball Tunnel, but it also had a dark reputation of violence among its prisoners.

One casualty was Werner Drechsler, a prisoner who supplied German secrets to U.S. Navy authorities. Nazis held at Papago Park labeled him a traitor and hanged him from a bathroom rafter. Controversy erupted over whether the killing was an act of war or murder. Some also questioned the lack of protection Drechsler received for aiding in espionage. Ultimately, seven POWs were hanged for the crime. Author Jane Eppinga examines the tangled details and implications of America's last mass execution.

The enduring queer feminist engagement with Valley of the Dolls author Jacqueline Susann's camp comedy legacy.

Catalyzed by her notoriously "dirty," fabulously successful bestseller Valley of the Dolls, the "Jackie Susann Sixties" brimmed with camp comedy that now permeates contemporary celebrations of the author, from Pee-wee's Playhouse to RuPaul's Drag Race and Lee Daniels's Star. First christened "camp" by Gloria Steinem in an excoriating review of Valley of the Dolls and compounded by the publishing juggernauts The Love Machine (1969), Once Is Not Enough (1973), and Dolores (1976), the comedy of Jackie Susann illuminated conflicting positions about gender, sexuality, and aesthetic value. Through a writing formula that Ken Feil calls sleazy realism, Susann veers from gossip to confession and devises comedies of bad manners spun from real celebrities whose occasionally queer and always outr? antics clashed with their "official" personas, the popular genres they were famous for, and the narrow, normative constructions of identity and reality shaped by the culture industry. Susann's promotional appearances led to another comedy of bad manners, this one populated with critics alternately horrified and delighted by an upstart woman vulgarian barging into the male literary firmament, and which continues to inspire fascination for the author, her novels, and their legendarily bad film adaptations.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Mexico's Political Stability The Next Five Years【電子書籍】[ Roderic A. Camp ]

Mexico is undergoing its worst economic cr1s1s since the world depression of the 1930s. In this volume contributors analyze significant patterns that might affect political stability and legitimacy, economic viability, and social change over the next several years, often reaching controversial conclusions. They argue, for example, that the military is not likely to change its present civil-military role; that political opposition, rather than political violence or pressure from foreign governments, will have the most profound influence on the changing pattern of political legitimacy and system stability; and that decision-making in the private sector may have the greatest potential to resolve or exacerbate the current crisis. Finally, they suggest that because economic conditions have been altered so dramatically in the recent period, Mexican policymakers will need to develop a new range of political alternatives to stabilize the economy and redirect the country's future.

Captain Gronow, joined the Grenadier guards as a young subaltern in 1812, having completed his studies at Eton and was widely know in England and the Continent thereafter as a raconteur and a fine pistol shot. His "Reminiscences" span four volumes in their original edition, an edited version was produced around the turn of the 19th century, having varied titles but following a stream of collected anecdotes set in distinct eras. These memoirs have achieved a high degree of fame and are justly accorded much historical respect, especially in those incidents where Gronow was personally present to record the words and deeds of those around him. Although admitted to the highest society, Gronow is far from being a snob and his works bear the stamp of a high degree of moral probity, they could not be described as the handiwork of a gossip.
In this third volume of reminiscences, military matters are in the background of Gronow's recollections, although they do appear occasionally, he mainly focuses on anecdotes on the celebrities of his time. The Duke of Wellington, Ouvrard, Louis Philippe, Marshal Soult, Sheridan, Shelley, Rossini, Guizot, Theirs, and Louis Napoleon are featured in varying descriptions of vivid detail. Gronow goes to some length in describing the events that led to the revolution of 1851 and the movements that led Louis Napoleon to become the last monarch of France.
"Reading Gronow is like drinking champagne - effervescent and mildly addictive"
Author - Captain Rees Howell Gronow - (1794?1865)

Roderic Camps’ examination of intellectuals in Mexico is the first study of a Latin American country to detail the structure of intellectual life, rather than merely considering intellectual ideas. Camp has used original sources, including extensive interviews, to provide new data about the evolution of leading Mexican intellectuals and their relationship to politics and politicians since 1920.

After Camp Portraits in Midcentury Japanese American Life and Politics【電子書籍】[ Greg Robinson ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】After Camp Portraits in Midcentury Japanese American Life and Politics【電子書籍】[ Greg Robinson ]

This book illuminates various aspects of a central but unexplored area of American history: the midcentury Japanese American experience. A vast and ever-growing literature exists, first on the entry and settlement of Japanese immigrants in the United States at the turn of the 20th century, then on the experience of the immigrants and their American-born children during World War II. Yet the essential question, "What happened afterwards?" remains all but unanswered in historical literature. Excluded from the wartime economic boom and scarred psychologically by their wartime ordeal, the former camp inmates struggled to remake their lives in the years that followed. This volume consists of a series of case studies that shed light on various developments relating to Japanese Americans in the aftermath of their wartime confinement, including resettlement nationwide, the mental and physical readjustment of the former inmates, and their political engagement, most notably in concert with other racialized and ethnic minority groups.

Ravensbruck Life and Death in Hitler's Concentration Camp for Women【電子書籍】[ Sarah Helm ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Ravensbruck Life and Death in Hitler's Concentration Camp for Women【電子書籍】[ Sarah Helm ]

A masterly and moving account of the most horrific hidden atrocity of World War II: Ravensbr?ck, the only Nazi concentration camp built for women

On a sunny morning in May 1939 a phalanx of 867 womenーhousewives, doctors, opera singers, politicians, prostitutesーwas marched through the woods fifty miles north of Berlin, driven on past a shining lake, then herded in through giant gates. Whipping and kicking them were scores of German women guards.
Their destination was Ravensbr?ck, a concentration camp designed specifically for women by Heinrich Himmler, prime architect of the Holocaust. By the end of the war 130,000 women from more than twenty different European countries had been imprisoned there; among the prominent names were Genevi?ve de Gaulle, General de Gaulle’s niece, and Gemma La Guardia Gluck, sister of the wartime mayor of New York.
Only a small number of these women were Jewish; Ravensbr?ck was largely a place for the Nazis to eliminate other inferior beingsーsocial outcasts, Gypsies, political enemies, foreign resisters, the sick, the disabled, and the “mad.” Over six years the prisoners endured beatings, torture, slave labor, starvation, and random execution. In the final months of the war, Ravensbr?ck became an extermination camp. Estimates of the final death toll by April 1945 have ranged from 30,000 to 90,000.
For decades the story of Ravensbr?ck was hidden behind the Iron Curtain, and today it is still little known. Using testimony unearthed since the end of the Cold War and interviews with survivors who have never talked before, Sarah Helm has ventured into the heart of the camp, demonstrating for the reader in riveting detail how easily and quickly the unthinkable horror evolved.
Far more than a catalog of atrocities, however, Ravensbr?ck is also a compelling account of what one survivor called “the heroism, superhuman tenacity, and exceptional willpower to survive.” For every prisoner whose strength failed, another found the will to resist through acts of self-sacrifice and friendship, as well as sabotage, protest, and escape.
While the core of this book is told from inside the camp, the story also sheds new light on the evolution of the wider genocide, the impotence of the world to respond, and Himmler’s final attempt to seek a separate peace with the Allies using the women of Ravensbr?ck as a bargaining chip. Chilling, inspiring, and deeply unsettling, Ravensbr?ck is a groundbreaking work of historical investigation. With rare clarity, it reminds us of the capacity of humankind both for bestial cruelty and for courage against all odds.

Cities of Zion The Holiness Movement and Methodist Camp Meeting Towns in America【電子書籍】[ Samuel Avery-Quinn ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Cities of Zion The Holiness Movement and Methodist Camp Meeting Towns in America【電子書籍】[ Samuel Avery-Quinn ]

Cities of Zion: The Holiness Movement and Methodist Camp Meeting Towns in America follows Methodists and holiness advocates from their urban worlds of mid-century New York City and Philadelphia out into the wilderness where they found green worlds of religious retreat in that most traditional of Methodist theaters: the camp meeting. Samuel Avery-Quinn examines the transformation of American Methodist camp meeting revivalism from the Gilded Age through the twenty-first Century. These transformations are a window into the religious worlds of middle-class Protestants as they struggled with economic and social change, industrialization, moral leisure, theological controversies, and radically changing city life and landscape.

This study comprehensively analyzes camp meeting revivalism in America to offer a larger narrative to the historical movement. Avery-Quinn studies how Methodists and holiness advocates sought to sanctify leisure and recreation, struggled to balance a sense of community while mired in American gender role and race relation norms, wrestled with the governance and town planning of their communities, and confronted the shifting economic fortunes and continuing theological controversies of the Progressive Era.

Its goal is to target the integrity of the New Testament using scholarly, historical and literary scientific findings.
Edenton and Chowan County, North Carolina is a pictorial history that celebrates early 20th-century lifestyles enjoyed by citizensof the first unofficial colonial capital. Conveniently located between three important waterways in Eastern North Carolina, Chowan County, along with its county seat of Edenton, is a remarkable community whose roots dig deeply into the 1600s when settlers arrived from Jamestown. The steadfast Perquimans River to the east, the rapidly flowing Chowan River to the west, and the serene Edenton Bay to the south have for centuries provided means of transportation, economic endeavors, and scenic views for citizens and visitors alike. By 1750, Edenton had blossomed into a distinctly rustic and bustling community, and these water canals had greatly contributed to the needs of the county's merchants, lawyers, carpenters, and plantation workers. Edenton and Chowan County, North Carolina is an engaging pictorial history that celebrates early 20th-century lifestyles enjoyed by community members of the first unofficial colonial capital. Readers will visit ancestral plantations and the ancient labor of seine net fishing, while the Norfolk and Southern railcar-steamship John W. Garrett plies once again across the Albemarle Sound. Many of the area's earlier residents are brought to life, in word and image, while they work at the Edenton Peanut Company, the Edenton Cotton Mill, and many of the old stores that lined Main Street (now Broad Street).

Every American has heard of the lumberjack hero Paul Bunyan and his big blue ox. For 100 years his exploits filled cartoons, magazines, short stories, and children's books, and his name advertised everything from pancake breakfasts to construction supplies. By 1950 Bunyan was a ubiquitous icon of America's strength and ingenuity. Until now, no one knew where he came fromーand the extent to which this mythical hero is rooted in Wisconsin.

Out of the Northwoods presents the culture of nineteenth-century lumberjacks in their own words. It includes eyewitness accounts of how the first Bunyan stories were shared on frigid winter nights, around logging camp stoves, in the Wisconsin pinery. It describes where the tales began, how they moved out of the forest and into print, and why publication changed them forever. Part bibliographic mystery and part social history, Out of the Northwoods explains for the first time why we all know and love Paul Bunyan.
