＜p＞The importance of "Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads" cannot be overstated. It created an understanding among academics and the public of the need to preserve all forms of early music. The John Lomax clan spent their lives doing just that.＜/p＞ ＜p＞This edition of the book contains the lyrics of the 153 original songs and ballads, of which 18 include illustrations, rejuvenated, of the full musical score, as well as an index and 10 additional illustrations unique to this edition.＜/p＞ ＜p＞John Avery Lomax (September 23, 1867 ? January 26, 1948) was an American teacher, a pioneering musicologist, and a folklorist who did much for the preservation of American folk music. He was the father of Alan Lomax (also a distinguished collector of folk music) and Bess Lomax Hawes.＜/p＞ ＜p＞In 1910, Lomax, who had had a lifelong interest in collecting mostly "cowboy" songs, published the first (and very rare) edition of Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads, by Sturgis and Walton. The book was reprinted by Sturgis and Walton in 1911 and 1915, and published and reprinted a new edition in 1916, 1917, 1918, and 1919.＜/p＞ ＜p＞In 1922, apparently, Lomax published yet another edition of "Cowboy Songs...", but this time by Macmillian, who was probably larger than Sturgis and Walton and had more marketing avenues.＜/p＞ ＜p＞President Theodore Roosevelt wrote the preface to the book and, recognizing the value of preserving early music of all styles, created the Folk Song Dept. within the Library of Congress. He appointed Lomax as its first director.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Many songs so common today were first printed in this book, including "Home On the Range" and "Down In the Valley." Before Owen Wister's publication of The Virginian in 1902, the image of the cowboy was essentially that of the dime novel - a rough, violent, one-dimensional drifter, or the stage cowboy variety found in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West show. Wister's novel was to transform, almost overnight, this image of the cowboy. Soon after its publication, Wister sent a copy, inscribed "To the hero from the author," to Everett Johnson, a cowboy from Virginia who had been a friend of Wister's in Wyoming in the 1880s. Johnson had migrated to Alberta by the 1890s, eventually settling in the Calgary area. Before his death in 1946, his daughter-in-law, Jean Johnson, transcribed Everett's stories of the old west and collected them into a manuscript, now on deposit in the Glenbow Archives. In The Cowboy Legend, John Jennings, building on Jean Johnson's work, details the evidence that Everett Johnson was the initial and prime inspiration for Wister's cowboy, and in the process shows that Johnson led a fascinating life in his own right. ＜p＞Charles King (October 12, 1844 in Albany, New York ? March 17, 1933 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) was a United States soldier and a distinguished writer. King was the son of Civil War general Rufus King, grandson of Columbia University president Charles King, and great grandson of Rufus King, who was one the signers of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from West Point in 1866 and served in the Army during the Indian Wars under George Crook. He was wounded in the arm and head during the Battle of Sunset Pass forcing his retirement from the regular army. During this time he became acquainted with Buffalo Bill Cody. King would later write scripts for several of Cody's silents films. He also served in the Wisconsin National Guard from 1882 until 1897, becoming Adjutant General in 1895.In the spring of 1885, General King (at that time Captain) was riding in the area of Delafield, Wisconsin after visiting the Cushing homestead on the Bark River (present day Cushing Park) and the parents of the three historic Cushing Brothers. Captain King came upon a man dressed in a bathrobe drilling young men with broomsticks. Watching this futile exercise by toy soldiers, General King began to chuckle. Reverend Sydney T. Smythe asked what was so funny, and the reply was, "I mean no disrespect, sir, but let me show you how it is done." He then proceeded to teach the young men the West Point Manual of Arms. The now Impressed Head Master of the St. Johns Military Academy (now the St. John's Northwestern Military Academy) inquired as to the gentlemen's name.
